MISS SCHERLING SINGS THE HITS
Hi. My name is Miss Scherling (Lori). I am an elementary general/vocal music teacher and singer/songwriter for children. I've developed a philosophy of music education based on humor, morals and fun. To me, music is the one subject which would not exist without all of the other subjects. Art, dance, movement, literature, math, science, history, social studies, language arts and cultural backgrounds influence every type of music created and I present this philosophy to children every chance I get.
My B.S is from West Chester University, where I was a music education / flute major with a minor in piano and voice. My M.M. is from West Chester University, where I was an Orff Schulwerk major. (Orff is the name of the musician/composer/music education technique (first name Carl) and schulwerk is German for schoolwork). The six years it took me to earn this degree were the wackiest, most bizarre, memorable and influential educational experiences, I’ve ever had. In the graduate classroom, I was instructed to play music, write music, sing music, dance to music, write poetry, turn poetry into music, work with internal hearing, exercise the active imagination, share musicianship, go through character building exercises, learn more about Developmental Psychology, compose, arrange, improvise, sketch, draw and work in small groups with brilliant, musical minds of great educators. Learning this technique directly affected my elementary classroom.
To date, I ask my audiences, in and out of the classroom, to play music, write music, sing music, dance to music, write poetry, play instruments, turn poetry into music, develop their internal hearing, exercise their active imagination, share their musicianship, help in building their character, compose, arrange, improvise, draw, color, create and have fun.
